extra ordinary

My sweet boy. My little Jake Man. When I look at this photo, there are so many things I see. But there’s one thing that leaps off the page: you have It. A spark. That special something that draws people to you.

I’m certain that you don’t yet realize what a gift your sensitivity is. In Kindergarten, it has caused hurt feelings, disappointment, and an easily bruised ego. But someday, I think your sensitivity will translate to insight. A knack for understanding people and how they feel. Empathy and the ability to appreciate the human experience. And that my little man, is something Extra Ordinary.

As I approach forty, I realize just how fast our lives slip by. Just a blink ago, I was your age, and now here you are. We’ve poured so much of ourselves into you, that I can’t help but wonder what you will carry through your life  from your precious childhood.

Will you remember our times on the island? How we dug our toes in the sand together, or how you ran back and forth from sand to shore, dragging pails of water for the perfect castle? How you chased seagulls and ran up and down the shoreline looking for the perfect shell to take home to your collection? There are a million little details that I will always remember. I hope they will chisel onto your memory as they have on mine.
